The Sports Illustrated annual Swimsuit franchise, which includes the magazine, video, calendars, an iPhone app and Web site, is one of the most, if not the most, profitable of any single magazine-branded franchise. Real Simple is leading its competitors in the women's lifestyle category in ad pages for 2009, taking the lead from Oprah for the first time ever. Worldwide, Time Inc. magazines, including Time Inc.'s IPC Media Unit in the U.K. and Grupo Editorial Expansion in Mexico, are read nearly 235 million times each month by approximately 137 million adults.
Time Inc. has a history of journalistic excellence, which was demonstrated this year through its Assignment Detroit project. As part of a companywide editorial commitment, Time Inc. bought a house in Detroit where journalists, photographers and bloggers from TIME, TIME.com, Fortune, Money, CNNMoney.com, Sports Illustrated and Essence will report on all aspects of life in the city, from its massive economic challenges to the pressing social issues that plague the city.
Time Inc. has experienced great success online through its aggressive digital initiatives; its Web sites attract more than 52 million unique visitors each month, more than any other magazine publisher, and serve close to 1.5 billion page views each month. SI.com received more than 7 million video views and 2.3 million unique visitors in the first day of the 2010 Swimsuit edition launch. TIME.com received record traffic when it announced Barack Obama as its Person of the year, with more than 30 million page views in just one day. Time Inc.'s digital properties are among the top 20 largest media properties online.
People.com continues to lead in entertainment news, with 13 million monthly unique visitors, and was singled out as "A Magazine Made for the Web" in the 2009 Advertising Age Digital Issue. CNNMoney is a leading business and financial Web site among vertical sites, with nearly 8 million monthly unique visitors, and 87 million page views. In March of 2009, Time Inc. launched LIFE.com, a joint venture with Getty Images. With more than 8 million images, the site launched as the largest professional photography collection available online and attracted more than one million unique visitors during its first week.
Time Inc. brands have also experienced great success in the past year with mobile. PEOPLE.com’s new dedicated iPhone app reached #4 on Apple’s list of the top paid entertainment apps. CNNMoney launched its iPhone app and quickly moved to #2 in the finance category. TIME also launched popular Blackberry and iPhone apps in 2009 and in April of 2010 launched one of the first apps for the iPad , which became the #1 paid media app in Apple’s app store at launch . And Time Inc.’s core titles are sharing branded content – including breaking news, celebrity interviews and links to stories and videos online – with an audience of more than 12 million people on Twitter each day. Time Inc. has also been active in social networking and mobile media; in late 2008, People.com launched PeoplePets, a social network for pet owners, while SI Digital debuted the first-ever fantasy football game for Facebook.
Time Inc. has also extended its brands to television. Essence has teamed up with Warner Bros. TV to expand the Essence brand, including the production of an original digital video series called "Extra." In addition, People en Espanolhas joined in partnerships with Telemundo and Univision. This Old House’s PBS home improvement series won the Emmy for Outstanding Lifestyle Program at the 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
And there's more. At the 15th annual Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, 428,000 attendees turned out for the nation’s largest annual gathering of African-American music and culture. In conjunction with the annual conference, Fortune launched its new Brainstorm Tech Channel. Life partnered with Google in 2008 for more than 10 million images from the Life Photo Archive to be made available on Google Image Search, and again in 2009 to present digital archive of Life Magazine from 1936 to 1972.
