Launched in 2010 as a part of ESSENCE’s year-long 40th anniversary celebration, ESSENCE Black Women in Music heralds the accomplishments of both emerging and established artists and influencers during GRAMMY® week.


Held during GRAMMY® week in Los Angeles, this lavish red carpet VIP cocktail party celebrates the achievements of both emerging and established artists and influencers in the music industry—from the stage to the boardroom. Previous celebrants include: GRAMMY®-winner Mary J. Blige, GRAMMY® winner Kelly Rowland, GRAMMY®-nominee Janelle Monáe, music industry veteran Sylvia Rhone, and singer/songwriters Emeli Sandé, Solangé and Lianne La Havas. ESSENCE Black Women in Music salutes talented performers and singer/songwriters who represent what’s current, what’s new and what’s next.

The Facts

  • Now in its 5th year, ESSENCE Black Women in Music has become a highlight of GRAMMY® Week and is held in conjunction with the publication of ESSENCE magazine's annual GRAMMY® Insider package.
  • This intimate gathering of 150 VIP’s and music industry leaders has featured special celebrity guests such as Prince, Bruno Mars and Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs.
