CNN en Español and Grupo Editorial Expansión Launch CNNMexico.com

February 18, 2010

Dynamic, innovative news site to bring Spanish-speaking users local, national and international news from a Mexican perspective

On Monday, February 15, CNN en Español and Grupo Editorial Expansión (GEE) launched CNNMexico.com, setting a new standard for the online news industry and revolutionizing the way Mexicans obtain their news on the Web. Modeled after CNN.com, CNNMexico.com offers Mexicans a dynamic, multimedia online news experience while covering national and international stories relevant to Mexico.

CNNMexico.com will integrate articles, videos, photos, and user-generated content to enhance its storytelling. All of these elements are accessible through the site’s organized and easy-to-navigate layout. The purpose of this new site is to provide news to Mexicans around the world from a Mexican perspective and with an emphasis on local relevance with rich content that will also appeal to the public outside of Mexico. The site also allows its users to personalize their CNNMexico.com homepage by enabling them to follow  issues and topics of their choice, and save their favorite articles and videos.

Additionally, CNNMexico.com’s users are invited to become a part of CNN iReport, the cable news network’s user generated news community. With registration and upload forms in Spanish, iReport on CNNMexico.com enables Mexicans to share their thoughts on various news events, as well as submit videos and photos related to news events happening around the world or in their own communities. Also, once vetted and approved, iReports have the potential to be featured in news programming on CNNMexico.com or CNN en Español.

“CNN and GEE have a long-standing history of success, and we are excited to extend this partnership and capitalize on those achievements with the creation of CNNMexico.com,” said Tony Maddox, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, CNN International. “CNNMexico.com will deliver a fully-integrated experience that puts articles, videos, photos and user-generated content together in one place to provide users with immediate access to all the news and information they need and want.”

Nick Wrenn, Vice President of international digital services at CNN, added: “We want CNN to be relevant to our users in all markets, and given the importance we place on Mexico, it is an important move to extend CNN in that country, especially in Spanish. CNNMexico.com's vibrant, diverse mix of stories will bring not only more world news to Mexicans but also more Mexican news to the world.”

CNNExpansión.com will continue to operate as an independent site, specializing in business and economic news relevant to decision-makers in this segment. The success of the site has positioned it as a market leader in reach and user engagement (Source: Comscore), and will provide the content for CNNMéxico.com’s business section.

Manuel Rivera, CEO of Grupo Editorial Expansión, stated: "We couldn't be more pleased to celebrate the launch of CNNMexico.com, the latest in a series of successful partnerships between CNN and GEE.  We previously joined forces to create the financial site CNNExpansión.com, which in just three years has become Mexico's leading online source of business and economic news, generating one million unique users a month. Now with CNNMexico.com, we will transform the general news and information category and deliver a whole new online news experience to Mexico."

CNN en Español, CNN’s independently produced 24-hour network in Spanish, is currently available in 23 million cable and DTH households throughout Latin America, and more than 4 million households across the United States.  The network provides continuous news coverage of major world events, live breaking coverage supported by in-depth analysis, worldwide business and financial news, global weather updates, sports and feature programming on such topics as health, technology and entertainment.
