This Old House Magazine Publishes 100% Reader-Created Issue
May 27, 2008
New York, NY -- This Old House magazine took do-it-yourself to an entirely new level with its June issue, on newsstands May 27th. The June issue is the brand’s first 100% reader-created issue. For the first time ever, the magazine has turned itself completely over to readers, online users, and TV show viewers. From front to back, ideas, stories and photos featured in the June pages came from outside submissions to a specially created, community-based Web site. The magazine introduced a new logo: "Your Old House" specifically for this issue.
“The editors sure learned a lot about you while sifting through the thousands of emails and photos submitted to the yourTOH pages on our website for this special reader-created issue of This Old House ,” writes editor Scott Omelianuk in his editor’s letter. “I think this is the best issue of This Old House I’ve ever read.”
The public voted for its favorite cover image from among four choices from the same home in Southlake, TX, which won the first-ever Remodel Contest award, as determined by the site’s visitors.
Stories in the 100% Reader-Created issue include:
- A Connecticut couple shares how they remodeled their kitchen on a tight budget with appliances found on Craigslist, at warehouse stores and more.
- This Old House online users reveal their best penny-pinching moves, saving $52,280 collectively on home improvements.
- Three readers act as an expert panel and offer advice to other readers about how to handle remodeling disasters.
- Readers share the weird items found during their renovation projects.
The June 2008 issue of This Old House is up in advertising pages close to 3% vs. June 2007, with new advertisers including Mutual of Omaha, Planters Kettle Nuts and Martha Stewart outdoor furniture/KMART.
All of the submissions not featured in the magazine are available at www.thisoldhouse.com/yourTOH.
