MLB And PEOPLE Magazine Announce 30 "All-Stars Among Us" Winners After 1.7 Million Votes Are Cast
June 28, 2010
(NEW YORK) – Major League Baseball and PEOPLE magazine today announced the 30 winners of the “All-Stars Among Us” campaign, which debuted in 2009 and recognizes ordinary individuals who serve in their communities in extraordinary ways. These 30 “All-Stars,” each representing one MLB Club, will attend and be honored during the pre-game ceremony of the 2010 All-Star Game on July 13th on FOX beginning at 8:00 pm ET (5:00 pm PT). In addition, one of the winners will also be featured in the July 19th issue of PEOPLE, which hits newsstand during the week of the All-Star Game.
Fans nationwide cast an astonishing 1.7 million votes at PeopleAllStars.com – more than double the amount of votes from the previous year – to select the 30 “All-Stars Among Us” from a pool of 90 finalists.
Among the inspiring background stories of these 30 community leaders: A woman who grew up homeless in China, but for the past 20 years has helped feed the hungry and needy of Eureka, California; a man who has earned $150 thousand in tips since 1981 by shining shoes – and has donated every cent to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; another man who took it upon himself to create a much needed website providing health education videos for the deaf; and a woman who serves the needs of low-income, HIV-positive Los Angeles residents – going so far as to personally ensure that no one dies alone. Style & Entertainment Group President Paul Caine adds: “We are delighted to partner with MLB for a second year to honor these 30 ‘All-Stars Among Us,’ and to provide these local ‘heroes’ with the national recognition they so richly deserve.”
“Major League Baseball is privileged to recognize this team of ‘All-Stars’ whose selfless and tireless work is making a significant impact within communities across the nation,” said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. “Together with PEOPLE magazine, we look forward to using the All-Star Game, the premiere sporting event of the summer, as a platform to honor these 30 winners and their worthy causes.”
