Julia Roberts Tops PEOPLE's World's Most Beautiful of 2010
April 28, 2010
(NEW YORK) – Julia Roberts tops the list of PEOPLE magazine’s 21st annual “World’s Most Beautiful” of 2010, marking the twelfth time the Academy Award-winning actress and self-described working mom has appeared in this special double issue. She is joined by fellow “Most Beautiful” Hall of Famers Halle Berry (14 times), Jennifer Lopez (nine times), Angelina Jolie (eight times), and Twilight’s Ashley Greene, a newcomer to the list.
It has been 20 years since Roberts, 42, starred in Pretty Woman, and her face seems almost unmarked by time. “She’s as beautiful as ever,” says Garry Marshall, that film’s director and an old friend. “She’s much more centered and calm now and not so stressed. She is quite the mom – very nurturing.” Ocean’s producer Jerry Weintraub adds, “She’s not a diva. She’s not afraid to get into an SUV and drive with the kids in the backseat.”
Being a mom is her favorite role these days – whipping up Southern comfort food and chewy granola bars for husband Danny Moder, 41, 5-year-old twins Hazel and Phinn, and Henry, 2, in their Taos, New Mexico home. Roberts tells PEOPLE, “Looking at my family is like a deep, cleansing breath. I am very blessed, and I try to show my gratitude each day. When I do get stressed out, my husband is a great help – he is incredibly funny, and laughter is the best remedy for stress.”
But it’s her comfortable confidence – and multimillion dollar smile – that has earned Roberts a contract as Lancôme’s global ambassador. Being the new face of the cosmetics brand is “exciting, really,” she tells PEOPLE. “And also fun to find myself with this type of new career at my advanced age!”
Her latest film, Eat, Pray, Love, based on the best-selling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, opens in August. “Nothing can prepare you for how beautiful Julia Roberts is,” says Gilbert. “She always seems lit from within, like a magical creature.” The actress “was never typical Hollywood,” adds Marshall, “and that’s what made her unique.”
Kicking off PEOPLE’s 4th annual “Stars without Makeup” section – eight fresh faces photographed in nothing but moisturizer and lip balm – is Diane Kruger, 33, of Inglourious Basterds. “I have a really large forehead, which troubled me for a while,” she reveals, “but I have come to love it. I feel like it has come to really define my personality.” Ashley Greene, 23, admits, “My favorite feature is probably my eyes,” while Kerry Washington, 33, says, “I fell in love with eyeliner when I lived in India after college for six months.” Supermodel Heidi Klum, 36, tells PEOPLE, “If I had Angelina’s [Jolie’s] lips, beautiful and plump, I would probably use lipstick all the time.” And Selena Gomez, 17, admits, “When I was younger, I wanted to be blonde and blue-eyed…Now, I love the fact that I’m half-Italian and half-Mexican and I have dark features. It took me some time over the years to really embrace that.”
For the first time, a special section featuring nine of the world’s most “Beautiful Jessicas” is included this year, with Jessica Biel, 28, revealing, “I think my parents were originally going with the name Snowmo [Biel]. So I guess in that respect Jessica was a real win for me.” Jessica Simpson, 29, tells PEOPLE, “My dad wanted to name me Misty Dawn,” while Jessica Alba, 29, says, “On my birth certificate, my name was Farrahdawn Louisa Alba!”
A new section featuring “Surprise Jersey Girls,” women with ties to the Garden State, includes Sarah Jessica Parker, 45 (educated in Englewood); Queen Latifah, 40, and Keshia Knight Pulliam, 31 (both born in Newark);
Brooke Shields, 44 (attended Princeton University); and Martha Stewart, 68, and Christina Milian, 28 (both born in Jersey City).
“It Runs in the Family” features four celebrity daughters who prove that for them, beauty is “relative.” Meryl Streep’s daughter, actress Mamie Gummer, 26; Phil Collins’ daughter, actress Lily Collins, 21; Jack Nicholson and Rebecca Broussard’s daughter, actress Lorraine Nicholson, 20; and Alfre Woodard’s daughter, Mavis Spencer, 18, a student who will attend Columbia University in the fall.
This year’s Hot List also includes Kristen Stewart, 20, who claims “My fashion icon is John Belushi. Seriously!”; Gabourey Sidibe, 27, who reveals her feel-good secret: “For my own happiness, I had to learn to like myself – and take the way I look out of the equation”; and Kelly Osbourne, 25, photographed in a Marilyn Monroe-inspired pose.
As for the guys, the “World’s Most Beautiful” issue includes 16-year-old singing sensation Justin Bieber, who insists, “Your hair doesn’t make you who you are. It’s part of my image; it’s not who I am”; American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert, 28, who gives tips on wearing perfect eyeliner; Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattison, 23, who says of playing vampire Edward Cullen, “I’m so sick of my own pallid, grey complexion”; and many others.
