PEOPLE Names Ryan Reynolds Sexiest Man Alive 2010

November 17, 2010

(NEW YORK) – He’s married to the awesome Scarlett Johansson, his star is poised to rocket into the stratosphere when he appears on screen as the Green Lantern next year, and PEOPLE Magazine names 34-year-old Ryan Reynolds the “Sexiest Man Alive” 2010 in this week’s special double issue, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the iconic franchise.  Reynolds jokes to PEOPLE that he prefers to sleep in the nude “because if anyone breaks into your house, I can’t think of anything more frightening than a naked 6’2” man coming at you.”  He’s proud of his ability to say “every swearword in Greek,” and he has a healthy appreciation for his native Canada, where he grew up the youngest of four brothers (one is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer).  “We’re trying to nationalize Sexy,” he tells PEOPLE.  “Sort of like Medicare.”  Adding, “The sexiest thing about Canadians is that there’s an inherent ability to be self-deprecating.  That has served me well in my career and personal life.”

In addition to Reynolds, PEOPLE marks the 25th anniversary of “Sexiest Man Alive” with a retrospective featuring an analysis of some key traits of past cover boys including “The Fantastic Four” (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon), “Screen Idols” (Johnny Depp, who People.com readers voted Sexiest Man of All Time), Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise, and Denzel Washington), “50-Plus” (Harrison Ford, Richard Gere, Sean Connery), “International Sexiness” (Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Pierce Brosnan), “80s TV Icons” (Harry Hamlin, Mark Harmon), and “Gone Too Soon” (John F. Kennedy Jr. and Patrick Swayze).

Supernatural hotties from True Blood (Joe Manganiello), Twilight (Alex Meraz), and The Vampire Diaries (Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder) show off their out-of-this-world appeal, sexier-than-ever Jon Bon Jovi reflects on his 27-year career and the various looks he’s sported over the years (“I look better now.  I haven’t had plastic surgery.  My hair is my own.  I’ve never had Botox”), and Twilight’s Kellan Lutz demonstrates in sizzling photos why “he is so hot…he can sell you anything.”

PEOPLE reveals why it takes more than just good looks for Jon Hamm, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal, Patrick Dempsey, Robert Pattinson, Matthew Morrison, and many more, to be “Sexy Because…”  Even macho guys need a place to get away from it all, so Tommy Lee, LL Cool J, John Stamos, Zachary Levi, Nathan Fillion, and Jason Segel opened their doors to their private retreats for an exclusive photo shoot “Inside Their Man Caves.”  Plus, Zac Efron, Alex O’Loughlin, Jesse Williams, Derek Hough, Chad Ochocinco, Trevor Donovan, Chord Overstreet, and Mario Lopez let their torsos do the talking in photos featuring their killer abs.

Conan O’Brien, the flame-haired, alabaster-skinned talk show host, fantasizes about the possibilities of being named the fairest hunk of them all in his story, “If I Were…The Sexiest Man Alive.”  He writes, “The call comes at dawn, as it always does.  My publicist gives me the news.  We are both bored by this annual ritual.  I hang up the phone and prepare for the madness.  Once again, I have been named PEOPLE Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive.  I have been through this nine times, and I know exactly what to do.  I make my apology calls to Clooney, Pitt, Depp, and Pattinson…”

Also, fans voted from among five celebs based on their sexiness and widespread social media popularity for the “Sexiest Man Alive on Facebook” (facebook.com/peoplemag) in honor of the 25th anniversary, with Vin Diesel blowing away the competition with 56 percent of the votes.  His reaction?  “I am blushing…for real…Grrr!”  Jersey Shore’s DJ Pauly D earned second place with 28 percent.

Plus, in an exclusive partnership with charitybuzz (www.charitybuzz.com/auctions/peoplesexiestmen), readers are being given the opportunity to bid on memorabilia and incredible once-in-a-lifetime experiences with some of PEOPLE’s “Sexiest Man Alive” favorites over the past 25 years.  Beginning Nov. 17th – Dec. 15th, experiences up for auction include meeting Prince William at the Chakravarty Cup Polo Match; a swimming lesson with Michael Phelps; and a workout session with Hugh Jackman, with all auction items benefitting the celebrity’s preferred charity.

Tonight, the ABC Television Network airs a one-hour special hosted by Kim Kardashian, “25 Years of Sexy: PEOPLE Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive!” at 10/9c, where the magazine’s selection process for the issue’s title holder is revealed for the first time ever.  For more on the “Sexiest Man Alive” 2010, pick up PEOPLE’s 11-29-10 issue on newsstands for two weeks starting Friday, November 19.
