Sports Illustrated’s Selena Roberts broke the landmark sports story of 2009 on Alex Rodriguez testing positive for steroids in 2003. In the two days following the breaking news, SI.com experienced a 13% increase in unique visitors, according to Omniture. Since the initial story by Selena Roberts and David Epstein on February 7th, SI’s coverage of the A-Rod controversy has achieved more than 715 million media impressions, including national segments on NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News and CNN and thousands of print and online stories.

2009 SI Swimsuit Issue
The 2009 digital launch of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit franchise saw record-setting traffic and unprecedented growth in video views for the third consecutive year. An emphasis on video programming resulted in more than 20 million video views in the first two weeks following the launch. As part of SI’s new experiential marketing efforts, the brand unveiled SI One, a Southwest Airlines plane wrapped with the image of Bar Rafaeli, this year’s Swimsuit cover model - the plane will fly between New York and Las Vegas for a limited time.

PeoplePets.com Launches
PEOPLE Digital launched PeoplePets.com on December 7, 2008. In just two months the site has already brought in 5,000 members. The members have uploaded more than 12,000 photos and given more than 6,200 “hugs”. January traffic was over 580,000 uniques and 4.8 million page views (Omniture January 2009).

RealSimple.com Re-Launches
On the heels of a 35% increase in page views in January (Omniture), Real Simple unveiled its new website this month with channels including “Food & Recipes,” “Home & Organizing,” “Beauty & Fashion,” “Holidays & Entertaining,” “Health,” and “Work & Life”. The site launched with more than 100 original “How-To” videos featuring the brand’s editors and covering a wide range of topics including how to carve a turkey, how to apply eyeliner, and how to make a martini. RealSimple.com counts All Bran, Best Buy, Quaker, Shredded Wheat, and Purina among its launch partners.

NME.COM Sees Record Traffic In January 2009
NME.com attracted record traffic during January 2009, according to Omniture. The site broke the 30 million pages barrier for the first time in its 12-year history (up 58 percent year-over-year) and attracted 4.3 million monthly unique users (up 143 percent y-o-y), making it one of the largest magazine websites in Europe, and certainly in the UK. By moving its Brightcove player to a new, more prominent spot above the homepage fold, NME.com also increased video plays across the website by 68 percent.

Time Inc. Sites Earn MPA Digital Awards
The MPA announced the winners of its 2008 MPA Digital Awards and three of Time Inc.’s brands took home honors. InStyle.com won for best mobile strategy. SI.com won for best web site in the entertainment and sports category and EW’s PopWatch won for magazine blog of the year. Time Inc. also earned 13 nominations for MIN’s Best of the Web Awards, to be announced next month. SI.com was nominated in the Editorial Excellence, Print Integration and Community categories; EW.com in the Blog category for PopWatch and in the Video category; InStyle in the E-commerce, Advertiser Program, Mobile and Special Online Coverage categories; People.com, CNNMoney.com and This Old House in Video categories, and Sunset.com in the Redesign category.
