Time Inc.'s 10 NYC Startups to Watch
Time Inc. hosted an event during NYC Internet Week to honor the “10 NYC Startups to Watch”. The list included Foodspotting, Goodsie, GroupMe, I-ELLA, Manilla, OnSwipe, SocialGuide, Wanderfly, WarbyParker and Yipit. The NYC startup community, along with clients, press and other influencers, came to the Time & Life building to celebrate. In addition to Time Inc.’s event, FORTUNE’s Jessi Hempel moderated a panel on NYC government and technology entitled Setting the Digital Standard: Open Government in NYC. While TIME’s Jim Frederick participated in a panel moderated by CNNMoney’s Laurie Segall entitled The 24/7 Online Newscycle & Reaping the Rewards of Real Time Reporting, which analyzed various factors such as measurement and social media on the 24 hour newscycle.

Cooking Light's Quick & Healthy Menu Maker App
Cooking Light launched its first app, The Cooking Light Quick & Healthy Menu Maker. The app is available for $3.99 on iPad® and iPhone® and is sponsored by the SPLENDA® Brand. Offering more than 300 recipes, the app lets users design delicious, quick menus in an interactive way. Users swipe through the photos—many shot specifically for the app—of chicken, beef, pork, fish and vegetarian entrées and then add two sides plus one dessert to make healthy and complete dinners. The app calculates nutrition per serving in real time—calories, sodium and saturated fat. If a menu meets or exceeds Cooking Light’s nutrition recommendations, the app lets the user know with green and red indicators. Since its release, the App landed at #1 in the Lifestyle Category and is the top-grossing food app in iTunes (#37 among all paid apps) The app was also selected by Apple as the iPad and iPhone App of the Week.

ESSENCE.com Redesign
ESSENCE.com unveiled a redesigned site which provides a streamlined, faster user experience with enhanced social media capabilities as well as a bold new design. New features include dropdown menus for improved navigation, a blog series with ESSENCE’s Demetria L. Lucas, guest contributors such as singer Kelly Rowland, life coach Lisa Nichols and TV producer/author Susan Fales-Hill as well as a new feature called “Can’t Stop Talking” that allows the readers to engage in discussion directly on the site. Additionally, ESSENCE.com launched a “Fierce, Fun and Fabulous” giveaway in conjunction with the redesign and the site will have a major presence during the ESSENCE Music Festival.

Golf's Fab Foursome Bracket Challenge
Sports Illustrated Golf Group announced the ultimate golf popularity contest, Golf Magazine’s Fab Foursome Bracket Challenge. The new bracket challenge will feature 64 golf-loving celebrities, entertainers, political leaders and athletes, competing in a March-Madness style format, to ultimately be a member of America’s Fab Foursome. First-round match ups include Late Night TV titans Jimmy Kimmel vs. Jimmy Fallon, all-time great athletes Michael Jordan vs. Wayne Gretzky, golf icons Phil Mickelson vs. Arnold Palmer and political leaders President Obama vs. House Speaker John Boehner. The results of the Fab Foursome Bracket will be determined by fan votes on Golf.com and Facebook.com/SI.Golf and unveiled in Golf’s No. 1’s issue, on stands September 2nd.
