Pop quiz: Who invented the quiz show? Time, of course.
Game Shows in Time History
In 1924, Circulation Manager Roy E. Larsen hit on the idea of using a new medium — radio — to promote the magazine. He wrangled free time on New York’s WJZ for the new program.
In the Pop Question Game, Time co-founder Briton Hadden fired off questions based on the latest issue, while Larsen struck chimes to give listeners a moment to guess the answer.
According to Larsen, these chimes later became the signature for the NBC network.
